Seiko History

The Seiko brand has its roots in Tokyo and its history started back to 1881. Although in the beginning, the founder had a small business in watch repairing, after eleven years he established the " Seikosha" factory. In Japanese, "Seiko" means "exquisite", "success", " minute" and "Sha" means house. After more than 130 years of innovations and hundreds of watch models ( from pocket watches to chronographs, divers, LCD's and voice recording watches), Seiko is still dedicated to achieving grand perfection.

The first watches produced under the Seiko brand appeared in 1924. In 1969, Seiko introduced the Astron, the world's first production quartz watch; when it was introduced, it cost the same as a medium-sized car. Seiko later went on to introduce the first quartz chronograph.

In the late 1980s, Seiko produced the first automatic quartz that combined the self-energizing attributes of an automatic watch with quartz accuracy. The watch is entirely powered by its movement in everyday wear. In 1991, to increase popularity, these watches were relaunched under the name Seiko Kinetic.

Quartz Watches

The world's first quartz clock was built in 1927 by Warren Marrison and J. W. Horton at Bell Telephone Laboratories. The world's first quartz watch, however, was unveiled by Seiko as the Astron in December 1969. Since the 1980s, when the advent of solid-state digital electronics allowed them to be made compact and inexpensive, quartz timekeepers have become the world's most widely used timekeeping technology, used in most clocks and watches as well as computers and other appliances that keep time.
